About Steve
In April 2025, Steve Robinson announced his retirement after 42 years as a Division I coach. Across his career he reached the NCAA Tournament 31 times, won three national championships, advanced to the Final Four eight times, earned 18 conference regular-season titles and eight conference tournament championships, and helped develop or recruit more than 60 players who went on to the NBA.
His final four seasons were with Arizona men’s basketball, where he helped the Wildcats win four conference championships (two Pac-12 regular-season titles and two Pac-12 tournament titles), reach the Sweet 16 in three of four years, and produce 14 all-conference honorees and two All-Americans. Before Tucson, he was on Roy Williams’ staff at North Carolina (2003–21), winning three NCAA titles and mentoring three Bob Cousy Award winners as the nation’s top point guard; he also spent 2002–03 at Kansas with Williams. As a head coach he led Florida State (1997–2002) — including an NCAA Tournament run to the round of 32 — and before that Tulsa (1995–97), with back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids. Earlier stops included Kansas, Cornell, and his alma mater Radford — part of a path that landed him in the inaugural A STEP UP Assistant Coach Hall of Fame (2019), among other hall-of-fame recognitions tied to high school, juco, and college programs close to Roanoke, Virginia, where he grew up.
Steve and his wife, Lisa, have four children (Shauna, Kiaya, Tarron, Denzel); retirement is a chance to spend more time with family — aligning with the priorities he cited when stepping away from the sidelines.
